The Dos and Don’ts of Exfoliation

For smooth, radiant, youthful-looking skin, there’s no way around it. Making exfoliation part of your regular skin regimen is an absolute must. Exfoliation is like the ultimate massage for your skin, sloughing away dead skin cells and improving circulation. But before you get to scrubbing, there’s some do’s and don’ts of exfoliation that you need to be sure to follow.

DON’T exfoliate more than twice per week

Neutrogena

As with everything else, there can be too much of a good thing. It only takes a couple of exfoliation sessions per week to make a difference, so don’t worry about exfoliating on a daily basis. To get the biggest bang for your buck (time-wise), try an at-home microdermabrasion wand. Swipe it over your face, neck and décolletage in the shower, and you’ll be glowing all day.

DON’T scrub too hard.

Exfoliation should leave your skin looking fresh and radiant – not red and raw. Being rough on your skin can also promote oil production, leading to breakouts. For your face, choose an exfoliating scrub that is coarse enough to get the job done, but be gentle when massaging it in.

DO use choose the right exfoliator for the job

The skin below your neck can stand up to a slightly coarser exfoliating scrub than your face, so choose the right exfoliator for different parts of the body:

  • Face – a scrub with finer, evenly-sized granules
  • Body – a coarser texture with ingredients like sea salt or ground coffee
  • Feet – either a rough exfoliator specifically for the feet, a pumice stone, or an exfoliating paddle
  • Lips – a gentle formula, such as a fine sugar scrub

DON’T exfoliate on broken or irritated skin

If you’ve ever shaved your legs or waxed any other body part right before exfoliating, you’ll understand why this is a serious DON’T. (And if you haven’t, now isn’t the time to try it.) Always exfoliate before shaving and waxing, not only to create a smoother surface for hair removal, but to avoid a serious dose of stinging and irritation.

DO exfoliate in the morning

Since your skin repairs and renews itself overnight, morning is prime time to scrub away those dead skin cells and reveal a new, radiant layer. For an extra treat, try an exfoliating scrub with coffee to feel awake and rejuvenated.

DON’T forget to moisturize afterwards
